The incident took place in Hartford County around 10 p.m. Sunday, March 5 at 456 Elm St., in Windsor Locks.

Officers responded to the home on a reported stabbing. As they arrived they were informed that the offender, identified as Sean Colgan, age 43, of Windsor Locks, was attempting to overdose on fentanyl and that he would attack police if he were still alive upon their arrival, said Lt. Paul Cerniack.

The victim, a 31-year-old came out of the front door of the home as officers arrived and was clearly suffering from knife wounds, Cerniack said.

"Blood was seen on his face, side of his torso, and left leg as he identified Colgan as his assailant," Cerniack said.

Cerniack said officers rendered aid to the victim and quickly determined that Colgan was in a back room attempting to commit suicide by fentanyl injection.

Officers spotted Colgan through a window pacing and visibly agitated in the dining room. He was called out by officers and Colgan rambled on claiming he killed a pedophile in Hartford, police said.

Officers entered the and observed blood spatter on the floor. They located Colgan who had a syringe against his neck injecting himself with suspected fentanyl. He would not release the syringe as he stepped toward officers saying he wanted to die, Cerniack said.

Officers held their ground as Colgan began to feel the effects of the drug and became unconscious but breathing. Medical personnel rushed inside and him with multiple doses of Narcan. He was restrained and sent to Hartford Hospital, Cerniack said.

The knife was recovered at the scene.

An investigation revealed he came home under the influence of suspected drugs and threatened to kill people. His erratic, combative behavior caused the victim to strike him with a baton in an effort to keep him from hurting those in the home, police said.

Colgan then stabbed the victim, Cernniack added.

He was secured at Hartford Hospital and detained until he is arraigned on Monday, March 6.

Colgan was charged with:

  • Assault
  • Reckless endangerment
  • Disorderly conduct.
